The Core Insight

Strip a virus down to what it actually is, and it's almost embarrassingly simple: genetic material, DNA or RNA, wrapped in a protein shell, sometimes borrowing a membrane on its way out the door. It has no metabolism, no independent growth, no reproduction of its own — it survives purely through mutation (especially in RNA viruses, which replicate without proofreading and so generate constant variation) and adaptation, including dormancy and immune evasion. Across history, that simplicity has been devastating — the Plague of Athens may have altered the course of the Peloponnesian War, the Justinian Plague weakened Byzantium, and the 1918 influenza pandemic infected roughly a third of the entire global population and killed more people than the First World War itself. But here's the part that reframes everything: roughly eight percent of the human genome is ancient viral DNA, inherited from infections so old they've become simply *us* — once written off as "junk DNA," some of it is now known to enable human placental development. A piece of viral inheritance sits at the very origin of how every one of us came into the world. Destruction and contribution were never opposites here. They were always the same material, doing two different things.
